Among the new things to come out of St. Philip’s College since the arrival of a new president are a parade of old faces that have either left or are in transition on the way out for good.

Since coming on board as president March 1, Dr. Adena Loston has seen eight of her senior staff leave, including two vice presidents, two deans and a department chair.

In fact, the only top administrative positions not seeing a change in personnel is the dean of enrollment management, the dean of student success and the dean of arts and sciences.

Loston credits the majority of the exodus to retirement.

“Retirement is not cleaning house,” Loston said. “Retirement is a rite of passage that people earn, and in eight years, I hope to retire myself.”

Among the eight, however, two higher ranking staff members were not allowed to simply retire.

The former dean of the school of applied sciences and technology, Dr. John Carnes, is now the night operations manager at Northwest Vista College.

“As for his position as dean, he was not renewed,” Loston said. “His contract was not renewed in the capacity as dean.”

She declined to comment on not renewing his contract saying she would not discuss personnel matters.

The same goes for Al Barringer, the former vice president of Southwest Campus, who no longer is employed by the district.

“I’m not going to discuss Al Barringer, and you’d know that already, probably,” she said.

She was, however, open to discussing the reason
