Jacqueline Claunch, Northwest Vista College president, announced her retirement effective in August during an all-college meeting Wednesday in Cypress Campus Center.
Amy Collins, Northwest Vista Faculty Senate secretary, said the announcement was expected.
“We were, unfortunately, expecting it for awhile,” she said. “There had been rumors.”
Claunch joined Northwest Vista in 1998, three years after the college began offering courses.
According to the college’s website, attendance grew from 246 students when Claunch began to 16,354 today.
Even though Claunch’s retirement was expected, the announcement still shocked employees, Collins said.
“There were a lot of tears,” she said.
Claunch becomes the fourth president to retire in the last three years.
President Robert Zeigler announced he would retire at the end of this semester. Dr. Eric Reno retired as president of Northeast Lakeview College in March, and Dr. Ana “Cha” Guzman retired as president of Palo Alto College in August 2012.
