Both men and women’s basketball tryouts will begin at 4-6 p.m. Thursday and continue 9-11 a.m. Friday, with men in Gym 1 and women in Gym 2 of Candler Physical Education Center.
This college has hired two new coaches for men and women’s basketball this semester who will be hosting tryouts Sept. 25-26.
Men’s basketball coach Louis Martinez is the director and head coach of the Hoop Dreams Toros, a local basketball team that plays nationally and locally with players beginning in sixth grade.
Steven Ochoa, math professor and basketball adviser, said he looks forward to a remarkable difference in coaching styles from last season.
“Last year, we had a problem with the team concept,” Ochoa said, about men’s basketball. “I think Louis will bring the concept back.”
Matt Ramirez was the coach last season when the team lost more than won. Ochoa said the losses were due to the infancy of this college’s basketball team.
Haley Capestany is a former Lady Ranger, and will be coaching the women’s team this season.
“Haley is young, she’s aggressive, and she’s also a hell of a player,” Ochoa said. “I like her energy.”
Capestany previously played with the University of Incarnate Word’s lady cardinals and Texas A&M-Kingsville lady javelinas.
The Rangers and Lady Rangers will faceoff in their first game against the Northwest Vista College Wildcats starting with women’s basketball at 6 p.m. and men’s basketball at 8 p.m. Oct. 15 in Gym 1 of Candler.
