The Student Government Association will host “Pizza with the President” noon to 1 p.m. Thursday in the Fiesta room of Loftin Student Center. The event is one of the few opportunities students can speak one-on-one with this college’s president, Dr. Robert Vela.
“The purpose of this event is for students to come and have the opportunity to speak with the president, Dr. Vela,” SGA president and American Sign Language sophomore Karen Elliot said. “Often students express complaints when they have issues on campus.”
The most recent of these is the issue of transfer degrees, which were previously referred to as generic degrees.
Elliot said she expects students to ask about transfer degrees as well as the complaints about parking, which she says have become common. “These are the topics students do voice their concerns on,” she said.
“Pizza with the President is a time for students to come and hang out, get to know who their Student Government officers are, have some free pizza and talk to the president,” Elliot said, adding that the event encourages camaraderie among students and staff.
Elliot encourages students to come out and said, “While SGA is the voice of the students, this gives students the opportunity to speak directly to Dr. Vela and we want them to take advantage of that.”
Elliot said she thinks Vela is looking forward to the event.
“This is going to be a new thing for him since he’s our newly established president, and this is the first time he has had the opportunity to speak directly with students and have that one-on-one feel outside of SGA,” she said.
SGA meetings are held noon to 1 p.m. the first three Mondays of each month. The next one is Nov. 3.
