District employees seeking to stay physically active can use the employee fitness room or take group exercise classes at Candler Physical Education Center.

Room 111 is filled with treadmills, ellipticals, stationary bikes and several resistance-training machines; it has all the basic equipment to offer employees options for staying active.

The employee fitness room was created to give employees a chance to exercise during lunch or breaks. Chris Dillon, district wellness coordinator, said there are lockers and showers designated for employees so they can work out, shower and return to the office or class.

Employees must fill out a key request form before access to the fitness room is permitted. Forms are located in room 131A of Candler. Once the form is approved, employees will receive a key free of charge from this college’s facilities department.

Hours of operation are 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. Monday through Friday, except during official school holidays and semester breaks.

Bob Flores, KSYM audio and visual specialist, said he enjoys working out in the employee fitness room.

“It has everything I’m looking for in a gym,” he said. “I can work out with no interruptions, and it’s close to work.”

Candler also offers classes such as aqua zumba, circuit training, yoga, Latin cardio and physical conditioning. Employees pay $10 per class for the semester.

“We just want people up and moving and excited about exercise,” Dillon said.
