Lady Rangers captured their first home win of the season Nov. 5 in a tight game with St. Edwards University, 52-48.

Lady Rangers captured their first home win of the season Nov. 5 in a tight game with St. Edwards University, 52-48.

Communications sophomore Shannon Villanueva led the Lady Rangers with 20 points, four rebounds and two steals.

Kinesiology freshman Cheyenne Baxa followed with 11 points, five rebounds and one block.

St. Edwards’s University junior guard Alex Rudder led the Hilltoppers with 12 points and three assists.

The Rangers forced 15 turnovers and scored 10 points off of them.

The Hilltoppers outrebounded the Rangers 23-17, but the Rangers grabbed six offensive rebounds and converted them into points.

The Rangers led by as many as 15 points and controlled the pace of the game on both ends of the floor.

The Hilltoppers forced a critical turnover in the final two minutes of play that cut the Rangers lead, 46-44.

However, the Rangers came back down to the floor, ran a simple screen and roll play that left Baxa open, which she used to score a layup. The Rangers had a 48-44 lead and stopped the Hilloppers on another possession.

With a little over a minute left in play, the Rangers had the ball.

Architecture freshman Alex Mallen pulled up for a deep 2-pointer and nailed it, giving the Rangers a 50-44 lead with 40 seconds left in play.

The Hilltoppers countered with 2 points of their own cutting the Rangers lead to 50-46.

The Hilltoppers forced a turnover and pushed the ball down the floor to cut the lead to a one-possession game. Hilltoppers guard, Rudder, pulled up for a 3-pointer but missed and Mallen secured the rebound for the Rangers.

The Hilltoppers were forced to foul and Villanueva put the game away when she drained two big free throws.

The Rangers seek to get their second win of the season as they host Southwest Texas Junior College at 6 p.m. Nov. 12 in Gym 1 of Candler.
