Southwest Texas Junior College hands Rangers its fourth loss of the season.

The Southwest Texas Junior College Cowgirls defeated this college’s Rangers on the hardwood 69-50 Nov. 12 in Gym 1 of Candler Physical Education Center.

Kinesiology sophomore Karina Covarrubias led the Cowgirls with 20 points, five rebounds and two steals.

“I made the most of every opportunity that was given to me tonight,” said Covarrubias, who connected six shots from the 3-point line. “My teammates were setting me up for success.”

Communications sophomore Shannon Villenueva scored 20 of the Rangers’ 50 points, grabbed three rebounds and dished out three assists.

Kinesiology freshman Cheyenne Baxa added 14 points and snatched 14 of the Rangers’ 30 rebounds.

The Lady Rangers, led by Baxa, dominated on the rebounds, 30-19. However, the Rangers committed 31 turnovers, and the Cowgirls converted on 45 percent of them.

The lead changed three times in the first half, and the score was tied four times. The Cowgirls were executing on both ends of the floor and led at halftime, 35-24.

With just under 10 minutes left in play, the Rangers made one last attempt to come back in the game when they cut the Cowgirls lead to 5 points, 48-43. That was as close as it got for the Rangers.

The Cowgirls outscored the Rangers 21-7 in the final eight minutes of play.

The loss of the Rangers put them at 1-4 for the season.

The Rangers will try to bounce back when they host the Palo Alto College Palominos at 6 p.m. Nov. 19 in Gym 1 of Candler.
