Karen Elliot, American Sign Language sophomore and Student Government Association president, represents the students of this college as a member of the vice-presidential search committee.

The search committee is tasked with finding candidates for two vacant vice-presidential positions.

The first position is the vice president of student success, intended to provide leadership in the management of all college student service functions and ensure the college operates in accordance with all overseeing bodies and accreditation agencies, including compliance with district policy.

The second position is the vice president of academic success, who serves as chief academic officer of the college and is responsible for overseeing various academic units, while maintaining the academic excellence and integrity of the institution.

Elliot has declined to give her personal preference at this time, but did give some of her impressions and what she is looking for as a representative for the students during the selection process and the open forums.

“Students want a candidate for these positions who has clear communication skills, a strong focus on students, a willingness to provide access, support and other services to students, and someone who represents the diversity at our specific campus,” Elliot said.

She added students want a candidate with teaching experience so they know what it’s like to work with students directly.

“Applicants that stood out to me were the candidates that did their research on the demographics, academics and mission of this college; value diversity; maintain focus on students; and have a desire to give them the tools they need to succeed, as well AS demonstrate an understanding and respect for the shared governance system here at the Alamo Colleges,” Elliot said.

“I believe we have a good selection of candidates, and the people representing San Antonio College as a whole have good judgment, and I believe we will choose the best candidate for the two vice presidential positions at this college.”

SGA’s next meeting will be at noon Dec. 1 in the craft room of Loftin Student Center.
