The holidays are a time of family, feasting and giving. This Thanksgiving, the San Antonio Food Bank’s annual “Food4SA” food drive has a goal of collecting 1 million pounds of food, with less than 250,000 pounds to go to reach the goal.

In the 2013 fiscal year, the community donated 50 million pounds of food to address hunger in southwest Texas.

“Last year, the community helped us exceed our goal by half a million pounds,” Dawn Thurmond, communications manager for the food bank, said.

Anyone interested in donating can drop off food items at any of the 26 Security Federal Credit Union locations in San Antonio or cities such as Boerne, Castroville, New Braunfels, Schertz or Pleasanton.

“Food and funds collected during this time are important as families continue to struggle this holiday season,” Thurmond said.

Online donation options are also available. Donating $1 is equivalent to seven meals or 10 pounds of food. Also, the SAFB website includes a virtual food drive, where donors can shop through a virtual grocery store and fill their cart with donations before checking out.
