Valentine Outreach Work Day Feb. 2 provided information on a healthy heart and resulted in 50 personalized valentine cards for residents of Fisher House and Harbor Hospice.
The event was sponsored by the office of civic engagement and the health promotions office in Loftin Student Center.
The theme was Big Hearts.
Students were able to walk into the health promotions office for heart-healthy snacks and make valentine crafts for Harbor Hospice and Fisher House.
Fisher House, 7323 West U.S. Highway 90, is a home-away-from-home for the families of seriously ill or injured patients receiving treatment at local medical facilities at no cost.
This college has done outreach activities with Fisher House since Sept. 11, Mary Elise Ferrer, coordinator of student success, said.
Harbor Hospice provides team-oriented care and comfort to patients diagnosed with a terminal illness and their families.
Harbor Hospice volunteer recruiter Alice Guzman has ties with this college and has become a familiar face in the office of civic engagement and the health promotions office, Ferrer said. Guzman’s fiancé went through the law enforcement academy here.
The company has 44 locations throughout Texas and Louisiana.
The health promotions office helps students learn about and maintain a healthy lifestyle by providing resources and education for students.
The center of civic engagement is a program that allows students to participate in service-learning and volunteer opportunities.
Students were encouraged to grab some hummus and pita chips and make valentine crafts for residents and patients.
Students could put a personal touch by having their photo taken and having it placed on the card. Messages were optional.
Student success adviser Mary Dayton and Ferrer provided students with a flier that gave information on the health benefits of avocados and suggestions on how to incorporate them into a diet plan.
