Thirty minutes before Staff Council’s 2 p.m. meeting Feb. 20, student success specialist Dee Dixon coordinated an event called Share the Love.

Tables in the employee lounge in Loftin Student Center were covered with handmade thank you notes from students at Margil Elementary School, recipients of the group’s children’s gift drive in December.

“The students from there made thank you cards,” Dixon said. “We had the thank you cards spread out on the table for people to see.”

Staff Council adopts an elementary school for the entire school year and completes three projects for the underprivileged students in pre-k to fifth grade.

Students, faculty and staff participated in the gift-wrapping as well as the gift delivery Dec. 12.

Their handcrafted cards expressed gratitude for the toys, clothes and books they received despite a few spelling, punctuation and grammar errors.

“Thank you for all the presents. That was very kind of y’all to do for us,” Margil student Aaliyah Smith said in her thank you card. “God should always be with y’all.”

Alex Sanchez said, “Thank you for the gifts I lake it a lot the Nerf is awesome and the book.”

A student identified only as Xavier said in his card, “Awsome, cool” followed by a stick figure drawing and presents.

Staff Council’s first project of the school year — a school supply drive — took place in fall.

“At the beginning of the school year, there is a school supply drive,” Dixon said. “School supplies are collected and are presented to the schools.”

Staff Council’s upcoming project will be a Book Fiesta.

Members will be collecting books for the students of Margil.

“We provide books for every single student in the school,” Dixon said. “A couple of us will read to a class.”

The Book Fiesta will take place in April; however, the date has yet to be determined.
