Police responded to a shooting in the 400 block of Maverick at Evergreen, about a block south of this college, around 5:45 p.m. Tuesday.
SAPD officer D. Johnson said the 30-year-old man who lived at the apartment was playing poker with a friend when an altercation arose and the resident was shot in the head with a .38-caliber revolver by his friend.
After the incident, the shooter called police and waited for them to arrive.
The victim was taken to the hospital in critical condition but was able to talk to detectives, police said.
The shooter was detained and is not facing any charges.
Johnson said there may have been drug use involved.
