School supply drive to help elementary school

This college’s Staff Council members are collecting school supplies to donate to an elementary school where 99 percent of students are considered disadvantaged, Staff Council President Jacob Martinez said Tuesday.

The Back To School Supply Drive started in July and will continue through Thursday.

Staff Council and college President Robert Vela will make a presentation at 10 a.m. Sept. 4. at J.T. Brackenridge Elementary School, 1214 Guadalupe St.

Staff Council encourages this college’s employees to donate supplies, but anyone can contribute to this drive at seven drop-off locations around campus.

This drive will help prekindergarten students through fifth graders.

The drive contributes to each student’s success so that one day students may enroll at San Antonio College, Leonard Ziegler, this college’s photographer, said.

Martinez’s goal “is to supply as many students as possible.”

He said the drive needs more paper products, such as spiral notebooks, notebook paper and construction paper.

They also will accept cash donations, which members will use to purchase additional supplies.

Staff Council members will donate an additional $350 in school supplies to the donation drive.

Martinez said he did not know how many supplies had been collected.

Supplies can be dropped off at Room 204 of Gonzales Hall, Room 260A of Loftin Student Center, Room 229 of Nail Technical Center, Room 132C of McCreless Hall, Room 314A of Fletcher Administration Center, Room 145 of Chance Academic Center and Room 631 of Moody Learning Center.
