The college’s third annual SACtacular on Oct. 23 promises Olympic-style boxing matches presented by the Boxing Club, live music by Piñata Protest, star parties at Scobee Planetarium, a Michael Jackson impersonator and tribute show, and an outdoor screening of Marvel Studio’s “Ant-Man.”

This free event 5-9 p.m. in the mall west of Moody Learning Center is for the community to have fun and learn what this college has to offer, said former student Maura Callahan who is interning with the college’s public relations department.

This is Callahan’s third year participating in the planning of SACtacular. As a student she helped plan the events in 2013 and 2014.

The late Dr. Alice Johnson, library dean, created SACtacular after realizing the success of the college’s 85th anniversary celebration in 2010. The main purpose for this event, aside from all the fun and food, is to showcase departments and staff.

“Dean Johnson realized SACtacular to be a yearly community outreach opportunity initiative put forth from former Dr. Zeigler (former President Robert Zeigler) and the school. This year’s event plans to already be bigger and better than last year,” Callahan said.

Allied health, mortuary science and American Sign Language interpreter training will be among departments showcasing their programs with the community. The kinesiology department and STEM programs will have interactive activities for children.

The Boxing Club will host Olympic style matches from 6- 8 p.m. Piñata Protest performs at 6 p.m., and the Michael Jackson Tribute show, presented by SAC alumnus Raul Riojas starts at 8 p.m.

Zoomagination will bring a variety of animals from around the world for an educational program.

This year the college celebrates its 90th anniversary, and Dr. Jothany Blackwood, vice president of academic success, will provide opening remarks for the evening.

Parking is free in Lots 13 and 16 and the two parking garages. Lots 20 and 21 will be closed for the screening of Marvel’s “Ant-Man.”

The films starts at 8:45 p.m. People are encouraged to bring lawn chairs for the screening.
