Ranger wins firsts in TCCJA contest for editorial writing, news photo

The Ranger Online takes second place in the division for larger community colleges.

The Ranger won 12 awards from the Texas Community College Journalism Association for work published in fall 2014 and spring 2015.

The awards were announced after the organization’s annual convention Oct. 27-Nov. 1 in Austin. The Ranger competes in Division 1 composed of community colleges with the largest enrollments.

The Ranger staff won first place in Editorial Writing, and Mandy Derfler, production manager in spring 2015, won first in News Photo.

The Ranger Online won second place in Newspaper Website, and Richard Montemayor, assistant managing editor for features, won second for Column Writing.

Third place awards went to Derfler for Advertising, and the Ranger staff for Headlines.

Honorable mention awards went to Ranger staff for Editorial Writing; illustrator Alexandra Nelipa for Cartoon; production manager Katherine Garcia for Newswriting; editor Cynthia M. Herrera for In-depth Reporting; and former photographer Neven Jones for Feature Photo.

The Ranger also won honorable mention for Best Overall Newspaper.

Bleah B. Patterson was editor in fall 2014, and Garcia was editor in spring 2015.
