North Central Texas College vice president to visit campus June 8 in bid for position here

One session will present initiatives for student success.

Dr. Billy C. Roessler, one of three finalists in the running for the position of vice president of student success at this college, will visit this college June 8 and speak to students, faculty and staff.

Roessler is vice president of student services and enrollment management at North Central Texas College in Gainesville, and has been in that position for the last five years.

He will give a presentation of student success initiatives 11:45 a.m.-12:45 p.m. in the Fiesta Room of Loftin Student Center and lead an open forum 2-3 p.m. in Room 120 of the visual arts center.

A pizza lunch and open discussion will follow the 11:45 a.m. presentation.

This is the fourth search this college has done to fill the vice president of student success position. Two previous offers were declined for personal reasons.

Foreign languages Professor Tammy Perez, chair of the search committee, said this current search began in February after the job was declined a second time.

The committee received 30 applications, which were narrowed down to the three finalists.

Other candidates include Dr. Lisa Alcorta, current interim vice president of student success, who will speak June 7, and Dr. Vincent R. Solis, vice president for instruction and student services at Laredo Community College, who will speak June 9.

Roessler received a doctorate in higher education in 2006, a graduate academic certificate in community college leadership in 2007, a master’s in mathematics in 1997 and a bachelor’s in mathematics in 1995, all from the University of North Texas.

In his application, Roessler says he can relate to current students, as he is a first-generation college student who had limited knowledge of many aspects of attending college — especially financial aid.

Roessler wrote that he is deeply committed to the mission of community colleges because of the opportunities they provide to change lives, yet many prospective students are not enrolling.

“Over the years I’ve learned, we must not only help students enroll, but also create the services to engage students and enhance success,” Roessler wrote in a letter accompanying his application.
