The office of student life encourages students to participate in the first Mascarita 5K run at 7:30 a.m. Oct. 15 at VFW Post 76 on 10th Street.

On race day, registration will begin at 7 a.m. Participants will receive a T- shirt, goody bag, snacks and refreshments. Arriving early is recommended to secure the goodies.

The deadline for students to sign up is 5 p.m. today.

The event is sponsored by Andiamo Race Productions.

Hundreds of runners and walkers are expected and a medal will be given to all participants at the finish line.

The top male and female runners and the first place of each age group category will receive a special artisan-made award.

The race will be chip-timed for those interested in knowing their finish time unless participants walk to enjoy the scenic view.

Luchador, Spanish for wrestler, is the theme, and a cash prize will be awarded for best costume.

Costumes are optional; however, “we would love to see some ‘luchadores’ running on the course,” said Mascarita organizer Jose M. Gomez Sept. 27.

“Andiamo strives to positively impact the local community, not only by honoring cultural traditions and hosting events that foster a healthy lifestyle, but also by frequently using portions of the company’s revenue to support local nonprofit organizations,” Gomez said.

This college does not have activities for runners, so senior student success senior specialist Marisa Martinez searched for a 5K for students who enjoy running.

“I try to find fun runs for students that are themed especially for Halloween,” she said Sept. 26.

Día De Los Muertos is another costume-themed 5K/10K run she found for students sponsored by Huarache Turbo.

The deadline to sign up is Oct. 21. Race day will be 4 p.m. Oct. 29 at Lady Bird Johnson Park, 10700 Nacogdoches Road.
