The SAC tech store at 1515 N. Main Ave. offers “free diagnostics for viruses and other problems,” manager Ana Ortega said Feb. 6.
The store has no check-in fees, charges $20 for most repairs and does not charge until the service is done, she said.
“We do repairs on computers, something we call trade in- trade up, where students can trade gently used devices and they’ll be able to get in-store credit,” she said.
The store is an Apple-approved store and offers Apple education prices.
“We’re cheap. Places like Best Buy charges you for everything and can be highly expensive,” she said. “That’s why we’re here for only students, facility, and staff.
“The stores services are also available to all district colleges, but students, faculty and staff at other colleges find it inconvenient to come to this college,” she said.
She said the tech store wants to have pop-up stores at the other colleges.
Pop-up stores are temporary retail spaces that sell items specific to that store. Computers, headphones and laptops, and the repairs, would be offered at these pop-up stores.
The staff at the store on this campus consists of four employees, whom she described as friendly and knowledgeable. She also has four work-study students a semester.
“We’re getting a good reputation with students because of the services and the staff.”
She based that on reviews on Google and comments students make to employees.
She said a move to Moody Learning Center that was supposed to be done this semester has been delayed.
“We’re moving because we’ve gotten complaints from staff, students, and faculty that were on the edge of campus, and, that we’re too far. And we really are,” she said. “We want to be in the center of campus, so students don’t have to walk all the way out here and maybe get lost. But what we really want to do is to increase walk-ins, so we can get more exposure.”
The store is open 8 a.m.-5 p.m. Monday-Friday.
