Former student Chris Aguilar raps his poem “People of the Corn” at the Poetry and Open Mic night sponsored by the Cheshyre Cheese Club and campus activities board Sept. 23 in Loftin. Aguilar was among poets who shared their work related to Mexican-American culture. He used corn to symbolize Mexican-Americans pushed into the ground by society but experience a rebirth once grown. The next event the Mi Gente Heritage Committee will host to celebrate Latinx culture and Hispanic Heritage Month will be Sept. 28. A Zoom presentation will be 11 a.m.-12:30 p.m. featuring, “The Walk of the Immigrants,” followed by an in-person event 12:30-1:30 p.m. in the Fiesta Room of Loftin.
