“A Night of Arias” will be hosted by the college’s music department and South Texas National Association of Teachers of Singing at 7:30 p.m. Feb. 9 in the auditorium of McAllister Fine Arts Center.

Voice teachers from  the San Antonio area will showcase their vocal and keyboard ability for students.

Two voice teachers at this college, Billy Craven and Becky Walker, are part of this organization and will perform.

“We’ve been talking about putting this together for a long time,” music Chair Jessica Howard said Tuesday.

Another upcoming event will showcase the talent of a faculty member in the department of music and humanities at 7:30 p.m. Feb. 13 in the auditorium of McAllister.

Guitarist Peter Carey will perform with a modern and traditional jazz quartet with SAC alumni drummer Michael Carey, alumni pianist Lou Cabza, and bassist Jim Kalson. The 10 compositions performed were written by Peter Carey.

“It will be a lot of good noise,” Carey said.

This spring concert series was kicked off Tuesday in McAllister with “Prayers from the Ark” written by Theron Kirk, former chair of this college’s music department.

This performance was a compilation of songs with 14 settings of a 27-poem collection written by French poet Carmen Bernos de Gasztold. Each song is related to an animal from Noah’s Ark and sung in soprano, tenor and bass-baritone.

Kirk’s compositions include more than 1,000 songs, pieces for brass and band ensemble, violin sonatas, strings trios, organ music, orchestral and more than 600 choral works in print.

“Prayers from the Ark” was performed by Walker and Craven accompanied by bass-baritone Gene Mabry from the department of music at UTSA.

“This piece has never been performed,” Howard said. Kirk had never heard this performance in its entirety.

All concerts are free.
