Heroes and Fantasies comic store, 4923 N.W. Loop 410, will be raising money for the Battered Women and Children’s Shelter from noon-5 p.m. Sunday during Domestic Violence Awareness Month.
The event, Women of Wonder Day, has auctioned original comic art and collectibles to benefit domestic violence and help programs and prevention services since 2006 in Portland, Ore. and Flemington, N.J. This is the second event held in San Antonio.
According to the event’s official website, Women of Wonder Day was founded in 2006 by Andy Mangels, USA Today best-selling author and documentary director.
Since then, the event has raised more than $136,000 for domestic violence programs.
Adam Conley, Heroes and Fantasies vice president and store manager, said the auction will have autographed items from the cast of “NCIS,” formally known as “NCIS: Naval Criminal Investigative Service”; “The Big Bang Theory”; “Star Trek”; “Glee”; “Criminal Minds”; “Hawaii Five-O” and personalities such as Bill Cosby, Jennifer Hudson, Anne Rice and Lynda Carter, who played Wonder Woman on television during the 1970s.
Conley said the items auctioned start at $10 and can cost up to $100.
Matt Frank, a comic artist from San Antonio, will be signing autographs along with other local comic artists, Conley said.
According to Frank’s website, his work includes cover art for “Godzilla” from IDW publishing, interior art for “Transformers: Flash Forward” from Fun Publications, and art refurnishing for Marvel handbooks from Marvel Comics.
Conley said members of a local “Star Wars” fan club, the Sith Shadow Council of Texas, and the “Transformers” fan club, Cybertronz Elite, will be dressed in costumes greeting and taking pictures with everyone at the event.
Local artists will make sketches, and a kids’ costume contest, raffles, and game show will also be part of the fun with prizes such as autographed items.
