The San Antonio College ROTC Color Guard is helping to raise money to provide housing for veterans.

The House our Heroes Veterans Assistance Program will host a 5K run Saturday morning at Woodlawn Lake Park, said Maj. Monica Martinez, assistant professor of military science. About five members of the ROTC Color Guard will perform before the race begins and then participate in the 5K.

House our Heroes is a nonprofit organization that assists displaced veterans who have nowhere to live. The organization provides stable housing, extensive supportive services including outreach and case management, as well as temporary financial assistance to homeless veterans and their families.

The program started in 1990 to serve the San Antonio and Bexar County area.

Sponsors for this year’s 5K include pain relief specialist Dr. Ricardo Alvarado, Las Palapas and News 4 WOAI.

The race begins at the park’s basketball court, 1103 Cincinnati Ave. The ROTC Color Guard will raise the U.S. flag at 8:05 a.m. The 5K starts at 8:15 am for runners and 8:20 a.m. for walkers. The event ends at 10 a.m. More than 300 people have registered so far, Martinez said. Registration is $35.
