Staff Council hosted its first “Fiesta Like There Is No Mañana” April 16.
The fiesta included food, snow cones and distribution of medals in the Faculty Lounge.
This is the first time in recent memory Staff Council has organized an elaborate affair.
“I have been here at San Antonio College for 40 years and Staff Council has never done anything this big before,” creative multimedia chair Barbara Knotts said.
The fiesta was a little getaway for this college’s staff, who had an opportunity to connect with one another on a non-professional level.
“Our staff (members) were able to leave their workstations and just relax,” said Carrie Hernandez, senior student success specialist. “It’s a great way to interact with other staff.”
Staff Council hosted a hat, shoe and float contest.
Campus photographer Leonard Ziegler won first place for his multicolored float with a little Gnome Ranger in the center.
Administrative services specialist Alice Garcia won the shoe contest with her bedazzled shoes.
Frances Mendoza-Diaz, advising team support specialist, won first in the hat contest with an orange hat the size of an umbrella.
First, second and third place winners each received a T-shirt.
Each staff member who attended received a fiesta-themed medal.
Although this was an event filled with dancing, music, food and medals, it also focused on adding members to the relatively small Staff Council.
Staff Council currently has 10 members.
“We also use it as a recruitment tool to encourage the staff to join Staff Council,” Ziegler said.
Staff Council plans to host more gatherings in the near future.
