Campus radio station KSYM 90.1 is benefiting a local youth organization this year with its 18th annual Alt 2 Hunger fundraiser 6 p.m.-2 a.m. Nov. 20 at the Amp Room, 2407 N. St. Mary’s St.

Four bands recruited by this college’s music business program will jam to raise money and food to benefit San Antonio Youth, which is dedicated to educating youth and preparing them to be contributing members of society.

The bands are The Native Roar, The Lonesome Heroes, Daniel Thomas Phipps and The Kinfolk, and Octahedron.

Admission is five canned goods per person or $5. One frozen turkey admits five people.

“It’s important for us to do our part outside of providing alternative broadcasting; KSYM’s mission statement is ‘Serve the Community’,” Jacob Peirce, assistant program director, said.

KYSM hosts Alt 2 Hunger around Thanksgiving to benefit a different charity before the holidays.

In the past three years Alt 2 Hunger has benefited the San Antonio AIDS Foundation, St. Peter-St. Joseph Children’s Home and the Boysville home for boys and girls.

SA Youth says the proceeds will go toward a new nutrition program.

“It could be the difference between a child going to bed hungry or not,” said President and CEO Cynthia Le Monds. “Every little bit makes a difference and goes to inner-city families in need.”

All proceeds will go directly to SA Youth the following morning including any frozen turkeys that will be kept in an ice chest overnight.

Alt 2 Hunger also helps promote local bands performing at the event.

“We look for bands that are popular now within the city,” Peirce said. “The bands play for free but get exposure and airplay.”

Doors open at 6 p.m. featuring indie pop band Octahedron at 7:30 p.m., followed by acoustic folk rock group Daniel Thomas Phipps and the Kinfolk at 8:30 p.m. and alternative country Austin natives The Lonesome Heroes at 9:30 P.M.

Headlining the night is rock band The Native Roar at 10:45 p.m. to midnight.

A DJ from Midnight Swim Records will perform between songs and after the headliner.

Guests must be 21 or older.
