The 15th annual Women Empowered Conference will begin at 8 a.m. Thursday in the auditorium of McAllister Fine Arts Center.
Dr. Robert Vela, president of this college, and Dr. Helen Vera, director of the women’s empowerment center, will welcome guests at 9 a.m, followed by an address delivered by Dr. Jothany Blackwood, vice president for academic success at this college.
Dawn Thurmond will deliver a keynote speech followed by a student panel until 10 a.m.
Thurmond, know as the laughing lady, is the director of communications at the San Antonio Food Bank. She believes that when people are laughing, they are learning. She will be delivering a presentation called “Dream Big.”
Multiple conference workshops will be offered until noon, when a complimentary lunch will be served in the Fiesta Room of Loftin Student Center.
Registration for the staff workshop closes today. Staff can register at Alamo Talent. Other workshops will include titles like “Own Your Dreams,” “Overcome Obstacles,” “Beginning Your College Journey” and “Continuing Your College Journey.” Some will be offered in Spanish.
Vera said that 700 people have already registered. The event will welcome people from Haven for Hope and San Antonio Metropolitan Ministries.
“We want to reach the people who have never been told they are college material and inspire them through networking and the resources we have,” Vera said.
A scholarship ceremony will happen at 1 p.m., followed by a networking session in the craft room in Loftin facilitated by Network Power Texas.
Founded in 1980, Network Power Texas provides scholarships and support groups for women and promotes equity and self-sufficiency for women through educational programs, activities and services.
