Event wraps up a donation drive for Seton Home.

The office of civic engagement services will begin a drive to collect baby items for single mothers at Seton Home Sept. 19.
The drive will end with a baby shower Oct. 27 in the Fiesta Room of Loftin Student Center.
Seton Home, 1115 Mission Road, serves 24 local families who have been removed from their homes because of abuse, neglect and sexual assault and are placed there by Child Protective Services.
Joseph Liedecke, coordinator of student life, decided to have this drive because he understands the trouble single mothers go through.
He thinks this is the first time the college has sponsored a drive to collect items for single mothers.
“It is difficult enough to be single, pregnant, and with or already having a child. The odds are against you already. Anything we can do to help would be great,” he said.
The civic engagement services student ambassadors will take boxes to buildings Sept 19 to allow students, faculty and staff to donate.
Everyone is invited to the traditional baby shower Oct 27, and expecting mothers from Seton Home will be there.
They will be able to get gifts that will help them through and beyond the pregnancy. As it is a traditional baby shower, there will be refreshments and game.
The drive will collect donations of items such as diapers, clothes and toys.
Civic engagement services has sponsored community events such as Alternative Spring Break staycation in March in which students logged hours volunteering at Haven for Hope, Habitat for Humanity Home Center and the San Antonio Children’s Museum.
The office also partnered with Habitat for Humanity SA to help build homes for needy families March 28.
Liedecke said the center will advertise the baby shower with public service announcements on campus radio station KSYM 90.1 FM. The center also will create fliers and notices on monitors around campus.
Seton Home, named in honor of Saint Elizabeth Ann Seton, the first American-born saint, opened March 5, 1981, at 309 N. Alamo St.
At that time, there was no facility that could readily meet the specific needs of pregnant teenagers in crisis who wanted to keep and parent their child
The agency provided services in that location until 1987.
