EcoCentro will celebrate National Drive Electric Week by hosting an event Saturday at the center at 1802 N. Main Ave.

The event 9 a.m.–3 p.m. is free and open to the public.

Activities include live music, food and a showcase of various types of electric vehicles.

There will also be a parade dedicated to these electric vehicles and presentations on the city’s air quality and the benefits of electric and hybrid vehicles.

Visitors can test-drive the vehicles and meet local owners, enthusiasts, industry experts and city officials.

An energy lab for children will allow them to build and play with electrons.

This is the first time EcoCentro has hosted this event, but the third time this city has participated, Steven Lewis, director of the service, trade and industry center, said.

“We would like to highlight the importance and technology of renewable energy type projects as well as the importance of cleaner transportation,” he said. “It’s not just a matter of pollution that vehicles can cause but the congestion they can cause as well.”

Lewis hopes the event will promote the technology and raise the awareness of the city’s air quality.
