The office of student life is looking for ball players for a coed softball tournament noon-4 p.m. May 1 and May 8 at Rusty Lyons softball field in Olmos Basin Park, 5200 McCullough Ave.

The last day to sign up is April 29.

The tournament needs four teams of seven to 10 players, with at least three female players per team if enough students register.

Student life is encouraging women to sign up.

“In the past, we have struggled with female players to sign up,” Marisa Martinez, senior specialist of student success, said. “We usually play it by ear that day to see how many females show up at the field.”

One of them will be kinesiology sophomore Kristin Aguilar.

“I enjoy playing softball,” Aguilar said. “I played in high school, and this is the closest I get to playing on the field again.”

Students must play both games. Each game is seven innings or 50 minutes, whichever comes first. In the event of a tie, teams will play one extra inning.

The winners will receive champion T-shirts, Martinez said.

The tournament will provide water to all players.

Former kinesiology student Thomas Lopez will officiate the games. Lopez has competed in statewide softball tournaments for the past 10 years.

Students can sign up at the office of student life in Loftin Student Center as an individual or as a team.
