The San Antonio College Dance Club will sponsor workshops taught by professional dancers from Broadway productions.

Kinesiology Professor George Ann Simpson, club adviser, said, “We have dancers from different musicals that are coming into town, who will come in and teach a workshops for us.”

The club is currently waiting to hear back from dance captain Rod Roberts of “Peter Pan” for a pending workshop in early December.

The “Peter Pan” musical will be at the Majestic Theater Dec. 4-9.

The cast of “Peter Pan” is currently in Hong Kong and won’t be back in the U.S. until early this week, Simpson said.

A dancer from the musical “Memphis,” winner of four 2010 Tony Awards including Best Musical, will do a workshop in February, she said.

The workshops at this college are free and open to the public.

The club currently has about 25 members, and Simpson said this year is the most active because this is the first semester dance majors have been involved.

An associate degree with a concentration in dance is being offered for the first time this semester. She said 15 students are dance majors.

“When you have dance majors, they want to make the club and the program successful,” she said.

Simpson gave reality television shows credit for the increased popularity of dance.

“The more that dance is visible the more that people are aware that dance is out there,” she said.

“Dancing with the Stars,” had a viewership of 13.55 million people Oct. 8, according to Nielsen ratings.

“If you are interested in dance, and you want to increase your dance skills and become involved in the dance community, the club is a great place to come and get started,” she said.

The Dance Club meets at 3 p.m. on the second Thursday of each month in Room 146 of Candler Physical Education Center.
